Arkansas, Wake Forest & North Texas highlight Roundball Showcase

LEXINGTON, KY– Six teams will compete over two weeks in November in the second annual round-robin Roundball Showcase, announced Monday by bd Global. Arkansas, Wake Forest and North Texas lead the field as “host programs” for the event with Delaware State, Iona and Nicholls State rounding out the field. All 11 games of the event will be played Nov. 17-30 as regulated by the NCAA’s rules on multi-team exempt events.

bd Global, LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing firm, is managing the event. The Roundball Showcase is one of six bdG college basketball events for the 2013-14 season, which includes the MGM Grand Showcase and MGM Grand Main Event both in Las Vegas, the Cawood Ledford Classic at the University of Kentucky and the Hoosier Showcase at Indiana University. In total, bd Global has contracted 78 games for the upcoming college basketball season.

“We are thrilled to have Arkansas and Wake Forest headline the 2014 Roundball Showcase,” said Brooks Downing, president of bd Global. “This event provides all six teams with quality matchups, including the ACC-SEC showdown in Fayetteville. The event is great for both teams and a terrific addition to the early college basketball season.”

Arkansas returns six of its top seven scorers from last year’s team that finished 22-12. The Razorbacks will be led by senior Rashad Madden (12.7 points, 2.8 assists last season) and sophomore Bobby Portis (12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds). As a whole, Arkansas returns 73 percent of its scoring – most in the SEC – off a team that led the SEC and ranked 16th in the nation in points per game last season (80.1).

New coach Danny Manning takes over a Wake Forest squad that returns its two top scorers from a year ago. Junior Codi Miller-McIntyre led Wake in scoring (12.6) and assists (4.2) becoming the first Demon Deacon to accomplish the feat since Jeff Teague in 2008-09. Junior Devin Thomas was one of the most productive big men in the ACC last season posting averages of 11.1 points and 7.5 rebounds.

North Texas coach Tony Benford enters his third season at the helm of the Mean Green and is looking to continue to build the UNT program in its second season in Conference USA. Last season’s leading scorer Jordan Williams returns for his senior season after posting 12.0 points and 6.3 rebounds in 2013-14.

Iona returns three starters from last season’s 22-11 squad that won the MAAC regular season title. Coach Tim Cluess has built the Gaels into a power with four 20+ win seasons and two NCAA Tournament berths since his arrival in 2010. Iona will be led by junior A.J. English, a 17.2 point, 4.3 assist performer a year ago.

Nicholls State returns three starters for head coach J.P. Piper. Junior T.J. Carpenter is the top returner at 9.3 points and 3.5 rebounds. Senior Shan Rillieux and sophomore Liam Thomas will bolster the Colonels line-up.

Keith Walker begins his first season as the head coach at Delaware State after serving as the interim head coach for the last third of the 2013-14 season. The Hornets return a strong trio of seniors in Tyshawn Bell (12.1 points), Kendall Gray (11.5) and Kendal Williams (8.2).

bd Global & Indiana announce Hoosier Showcase

The Indiana University men’s basketball team announced its 2014-15 non-conference schedule and will open its regular season on Friday, November 14 when it hosts Mississippi Valley State.

Including conference play, IU will play 16 games against teams that finished in the top 75 of the RPI a year ago, 11 games against teams that have been ranked nationally in a 2014-15 preseason poll and 10 games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament. Only a handful of times and television designations are being released at this time. IU will have games on the Big Ten Network, the ESPN Family of Networks and on CBS.

Statement from Ed O’Bannon regarding NCAA trail ruling

Statement from Ed O’Bannon, lead plaintiff in lawsuit versus the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), regarding Judge Claudia Wilken’s ruling in favor of the plaintiffs on Aug. 8, 2014:

“I am very pleased with Judge Wilken’s ruling. This is a game-changer for college athletes, both current and former. From the outset when I saw my image being used as a character in a video game, I just wanted to right a wrong. It is only fair that your own name, image and likeness belong to you, regardless of your definition of amateurism. Judge Wilken’s ruling ensures that basic principle shall apply to all participants in college athletics.

“I want to thank Michael Hausfeld for trumpeting our cause in this class action suit and I want to give a special thanks to Sonny Vaccaro for giving me the support and encouragement to pursue this course of action. My co-plaintiffs and myself are celebrating a big victory tonight…a win where justice was served.”

bd Global announces 2014 MGM Grand Showcase & Main Event

LAS VEGAS – MGM Grand (www.mgmgrand.com) will play host to two premium regular-season events next season featuring 12 teams and 10 games at the 16,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena. The action tips November 24-26 with the “MGM Grand Main Event,” a new tournament featuring eight teams playing on Monday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. The second annual “MGM Grand Showcase” then returns Saturday, Dec. 20 with a high-profile doubleheader benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, an initiative spearheaded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (www.nabc.com) and the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org). Six of the games will be televised nationally on the ESPN Networks.

The MGM Grand Main Event features two four-team brackets with each team playing two games November 24 and November 26. The Heavyweight bracket includes Auburn, Oklahoma State, Oregon State and Tulsa while the Middleweight bracket will feature Louisiana, Milwaukee, Oral Roberts and a final team to be announced. The pairings for both brackets will be announced on ESPN.com Tuesday, Aug. 5. An additional eight games will be played at home sites preceding the games in Las Vegas.

The action returns in December when UNLV headlines the MGM Grand Showcase with its first appearance at MGM Grand. The action tips Saturday, Dec. 20 with Oklahoma versus Washington at 6 p.m. PT followed by the Runnin’ Rebels battling Utah at 8:30 p.m. Both games will be nationally televised with Oklahoma-Washington on ESPNU and UNLV-Utah on ESPN2.

By adding the November tournament, MGM Grand continues to strengthen its presence in college basketball. Two years ago, the resort lured the Pac-12 Tournament away from Los Angeles and the annual league tournament has experienced tremendous success in Las Vegas. Last season, the first Showcase doubleheader saw Oklahoma State defeat Colorado and New Mexico beat Marquette. Both regular season events will be managed by bd Global, LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing agency.

“Many thanks to MGM Grand and its President and COO Scott Sibella for the commitment to bring the best of college basketball to Las Vegas by supporting both of these outstanding events,” said Brooks Downing, president of bd Global, the event promoter. “Our goal is to brand MGM Grand as the ‘college basketball capital of Las Vegas’ and with both the Main Event and Showcase we have set the foundation for bigger and better things to come in the next few years.”

MGM GRAND MAIN EVENT

The action tips at MGM Grand Monday, Nov. 24 with the Middleweight bracket in the first session beginning at 11 a.m. PT. The evening session tips at 5:30 p.m. featuring the two Heavyweight bracket games (5:30 p.m. & 8 p.m. PT).

Three first-year head coaches headline the Heavyweight bracket. Excitement is high at Auburn as new coach Bruce Pearl has reinvigorated the program. Pearl has immediately increased the talent level on the Plains with three transfers – KC Ross-Miller (8.3 points last season at New Mexico State), Kareem Canty (16.3 points at Marshall) and Antoine Mason (the nation’s top leading returning scorer at 25.6 points at Niagara). Defending Conference USA Champion Tulsa moves to the American Athletic Conference next season and hired former Missouri coach Frank Haith.  The Golden Hurricane return four starters including leading scorer James Woodard (15.5 points). Oregon State made a splash by hiring coach Wayne Tinkle from Montana. Tinkle led the Grizzlies to three NCAA Tournament appearances and three conference titles over the past five years. Oklahoma State won 21 games last season including a 78-73 victory over Colorado at the inaugural MGM Grand Showcase. Travis Ford’s Cowboys will be led by senior Le’Bryan Nash (13.9 points and 5.5 rebounds) and transfer Anthony Hickey (8.4 points, 3.7 assists last season at LSU).

The Main Event’s Middleweight bracket features a competitive field of teams that each could be competing for conference titles next season. Despite the loss of NBA Draft lottery selection Elfrid Payton, Louisiana appears primed to make a run at a return trip to the NCAA Tournament. Last season’s Sun Belt Conference champions return second-leading scorer Shawn Long (18.6 points and 10.4 rebounds). Milwaukee returns three starters from last season’s 21-win team led by juniors Matt Tiby (12.0 points) and Austin Arians (11.1 points). Coach Scott Sutton has built Oral Roberts into one of the nation’s top mid-major programs averaging more than 20 wins per season over the past decade. The Golden Eagles lose only one starter from last season and will be led by Obi Emegano (19.0 points) and Korey Billbury (15.3 points).

MGM GRAND SHOWCASE

UNLV will make the one-mile commute down Tropicana Avenue for the school’s first game at MGM Grand. Coach Dave Rice’s Rebels finished 20-13 last season and bring in a Top 5 nationally ranked recruiting class highlighted by three Top 50 players in Rashad Vaughn (No. 8-ranked player by Rivals.com), Dwayne Morgan (No. 15) and Goodluck Okonoboh (No. 31).

Coach Larry Krystkowiak is quickly rebuilding the Utah Utes back into a national power. Utah returns the bulk of its team that finished 21-12 last season. The Utes will be led by seniors Brandon Taylor and Jordan Loveridge, second and third on the team in scoring, respectively, in 2013-14.

Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger returns to Las Vegas where he led UNLV to four NCAA Tournament appearances in seven years as the Rebels’ head coach. Now entering his fourth season as the Sooners’ coach, Kruger has taken OU to the last two NCAA Tournaments with 20+ wins in each of the past two seasons.

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar is now the longest-tenured head coach in the Pac-12 Conference and will be entering his 13th season at UW. In a four-year stretch from 2009-2012, his Huskies dominated the league with two regular season conference titles and two tournament crowns. UW will be led by former Findlay Prep star Nigel Williams-Goss, a sophomore guard that was second on the team in scoring as a freshman at 13.8 points per game.

A portion of every ticket sold for the MGM Grand Showcase will directly benefit Coaches vs. Cancer. The program provides critical mission outreach while raising funds in support of the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving efforts to help people stay well and get well, fund groundbreaking research into cancer’s causes and cures, and fight back through legislative action at the local, state, and national levels. Since 1993, high school and college coaches across the country have raised more than $87 million to support the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.

Reggie Minton, NABC deputy executive director, said, “Our NABC coaches have championed the Coaches vs. Cancer program for 20 years now. We are very appreciative for the support we receive for this initiative in the hope of finding a cure for cancer.

Statement from Ed O’Bannon regarding NCAA trial

Statement from Ed O’Bannon, lead plaintiff in lawsuit versus the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), regarding the trial start on Monday, June 9th:

“What began five years ago as a complaint over the use of my own likeness, finally reaches its apex on Monday when our case brings the NCAA and its practices into a judicial forum. As I’ve stated from the very beginning, it is time to right a wrong. I look forward to making our case in court, a case on behalf of both current and former student-athletes who have been exploited and unfairly constrained within a free market society. Players need a voice and we are here to finally give them their rightful voice as an integral part of a multi-billion dollar industry. Now is the time for change.”

Mr. O’Bannon will not be made available to the media until the conclusion of the trial and will not make any additional statements due to his forthcoming testimony. All future media inquiries for Mr. O’Bannon can be made through bd Global at 859.951.6141.

Murgalo, Jr., General Manager of the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort. “Our dedicated staff is ready to provide the highest level of hospitality and service to make their experience truly memorable.”
