No. 25 Baylor beats Colorado 72-60 in Buckets and Boots Showcase nightcap

DALLAS — Kenny Chery figures his most important job is getting to the ball to Baylor’s heralded frontcourt duo of Cory Jefferson and Isaiah Austin.

The transfer guard still handled his share of the scoring in his first game for the No. 25 Bears.

Chery scored 14 points, Jefferson had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Baylor beat cold-shooting Colorado 72-60 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

“Try to be more of a vocal leader,” Chery, a native of Canada, said of trying to make a first impression after coming in from a junior college in Missouri.

“Try to get Cory, Isaiah, everybody more touches. Just be a team guy.”

The late-starting final game of a tripleheader at the downtown Dallas home of the NBA’s Mavericks featured last year’s NIT champion in Baylor and a Colorado team coming off the school’s first back-to-back trips to the NCAA tournament in 50 years.

SMU tops TCU 69-61 in Metroplex rivalry game of Buckets and Boots Showcase

DALLAS — Transfer guard Nic Moore had 13 points and eight rebounds in his SMU debut, and the Mustangs beat TCU 69-61 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Moore played one season for Illinois State before transferring last year when his coach, Tim Jankovich, came with 73-year-old Larry Brown as an assistant and the head coach in waiting with SMU.

After sitting out last season, Moore, a sophomore, was 4 of 11 from the field, including 3 of 8 from 3-point range, and had four assists in his return.
Brandon Parrish led TCU with 13 points.

Brown and TCU coach Trent Johnson started their second seasons at the rival schools from Dallas and Fort Worth. They were playing the middle game of a season-opening tripleheader at the downtown Dallas home of the NBA’s Mavericks.

Oklahoma pulls away late to beat Alabama in Buckets and Boots Showcase

DALLAS — The retooled Oklahoma Sooners passed the first test on Friday in their attempt to return to the NCAA Tournament.

Sophomore guard Buddy Hield scored 18 points and sophomore forward Ryan Spangler added 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as the Sooners pulled away in the final six minutes to defeat Alabama 82-73 in the season debut for both teams. The game was the opener of a college basketball tripleheader played at American Airlines Center, home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Oklahoma lost 68 percent of its scoring from the 2012-13 team that finished 20-12 after a first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament. Among the Sooners’ personnel losses were senior forward Romero Osby, the No. 2 scorer in the Big 12 Conference, and junior forward Amath M’Baye, who declared for the NBA draft.

“Most games are going to be decided in kind of that 3- to 6-minute area,” said Lon Kruger, Oklahoma’s third-year coach. “Someone’s going to make a little run and create a margin that they can play with the rest of the way.”

Alabama, Oklahoma provide donation for tornado relief

DALLAS – While Alabama and Oklahoma tipped off the 2013-14 college basketball season as the first game in the Buckets and Boots Showcase on Friday, before the first horn sounded, the two teams met at mid-court to make a joint donation of $20,000 to the United Way of Norman, Okla., an effort to provide continued support in the wake of the devastating tornado that leveled parts of Moore, Okla., earlier this year.

On May 20, an EF5 tornado ripped through Moore and surrounding areas, killing 23 people and injuring nearly 400. The tornado was 1.3 miles wide and its peak winds were estimated at 210 miles per hour. Its path tore apart schools, homes, businesses and communities, leaving a ravaged area behind.

When this game was first arranged back in June – the first game of a tripleheader in Dallas to signify the start of the college basketball season – Coach Anthony Grant offered to donate a portion of Alabama’s event proceeds to OU’s charity of choice for tornado relief. After all, Grant witnessed first-hand the devastation from an EF4 tornado that hit the University of Alabama just two years earlier, one of 358 in a four-day April tornado outbreak that was unprecedented in U.S. history. That tornado’s path stretched 80 miles across Alabama, and after hitting Tuscaloosa continued into parts of Birmingham, leaving behind 64 dead, including six Alabama students, and more than $2 billion in property damage. Immediately after the April 2011 storms, Grant established the “Sweet Home Fund” for tornado relief, providing assistance for those who had lost their homes.

“What prompted the donation was the tornado that struck Oklahoma, since we went through a very similar thing here in Tuscaloosa,” Coach Grant said. “I reached out to Coach (Lon) Kruger and asked if there was anything that we could do to try and assist the people there and in the areas that were devastated by the tornado. He and I had a conversation and he asked me some advice on things that he could do in the aftermath from a long-term standpoint. Shortly thereafter, the opportunity to play came about and one of the things that I thought would be a good idea since we were playing each other and both of us faced similar tragedies was to reach out and see if we could use this opportunity to benefit those people that were affected by the tornado. Thankfully, the promoters with the event supported the idea, and Coach Kruger was on board as well. Hopefully, it will be money well used to help those in need.”

Once notified of the Crimson Tide’s intention to make the donation at the Buckets and Boots Showcase, Coach Kruger and the OU athletics department identified the United Way of Norman as the recipient, which the Sooners had worked closely with after this year’s Oklahoma twister. Then Kruger and the Sooner’s took it one step further by matching Alabama’s generous donation.

“What a wonderful gesture by Coach Grant and Alabama to assist the great people of Oklahoma affected by the tornado tragedies of last spring,” Kruger said, whose team responded with relief efforts immediately after the tornado hit, much like Bama’s squad had done two years earlier. “We appreciate their generosity and are pleased to have the opportunity to match their donation to the United Way for this tremendous cause.”

To date, more than $15.6 million has been donated or pledged through the United Way of Norman. Many of the funds have gone to support mental health and trauma counseling for adults and children, debriefing for first responders, restoration of treatment space used for youth counseling, as well as numerous other immediate needs.

Fund also have supported “House in a Box,” a program managed by St. Vincent DePaul in Norman which provides a list of household items and furniture for affected families.

“The outpouring of support following the May tornadoes has been remarkable,” said Kristin Collins, president of the United Way of Norman. “Not only were we blessed in the immediate aftermath of the storms, but we have continued to see such heartfelt generosity over the months that have followed.  We are especially thankful to the University of Oklahoma and the OU Athletic Department for its ongoing efforts to provide for the people affected by May’s devastating storms.  And we extend a big ‘thank you’ to the University of Alabama for participating in this special day of giving.”

Tripleheader tips off the 2013 college basketball season in Dallas

DALLAS – While the Final Four returns to North Texas in April for the first time since 1986, the season tips on opening day, this Friday, Nov. 8, at American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas with the Buckets and Boots Showcase, a college basketball tripleheader anchored with Big 12 Conference teams.

Oklahoma battles Alabama in the opener at 4 p.m. CT followed by Metroplex-rivals TCU and SMU at 6:30 p.m. The nightcap promises a blockbuster with No. 24 Baylor taking on former conference rival Colorado at 9 p.m.

“This is a tremendous tripleheader for the fans of North Texas,” said Bill Frieder, the former college coach turned analyst who will serve on the broadcast crew with Brad Sham for Westwood One Radio. “All of these teams have great momentum, and it’s fitting that they start the season 18 minutes from where Final Four will be hosted.”

Oklahoma, whose football team plays at Baylor the night before, takes on Anthony Grant’s Crimson Tide squad. The two teams return a combined eight of 10 starters from last year, a season where both teams won 20 games.

“And then you have TCU-SMU,” Frieder said. “Larry Brown is a story unto itself, and his penchant for turning struggling teams into contenders is well documented. Trent Johnson also has coached two different teams to the Sweet 16, so expect to see two much-improved teams battling for bragging rights.”

The nightcap features Baylor, starting its seventh straight season ranked in the a preseason Top-25 poll, taking on Colorado, which was just a few votes shy of joining BU in the Top 25.

“Baylor has an NBA frontline with Isaiah Austin and Cory Jefferson while the Buffaloes have one of the nation’s best wing players in Spencer Dinwiddie,” added Frieder. “Both of these teams will compete for conference championships this season.”

The tripleheader is the first of its kind to be played on opening day in the city where the season will conclude. Since it was first announced in late summer, the tip-off event also has adopted a new name, borrowing the title of its official charity, Buckets and Boots. The organization provides funding for volunteer fire departments, and was launched in 2011 in response to the devastating wildfires that destroyed parts of Palo Pinto County, just west of Dallas.

“As we have grown our initiative, we have found that the need statewide is tremendous,” said businessman Lance Byrd, who along with Nancy Richards, Mike Patterson and Craig James were the founders of Buckets and Boots. “This event is another opportunity to establish our name with a premium sports event in North Texas.”

Tickets, which are priced at $29 and up, are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations as well the American Airlines Center box office or can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com. MGM Grand Showcase boasts three pre-season Top-25 teams in AP poll

LAS VEGAS – Three Top-25 teams in the pre-season Associated Press Poll will be in action at inaugural MGM Grand Showcase on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013. In the new poll released Thursday, the nationally televised doubleheader will feature No. 17 Marquette vs. No. 23 New Mexico followed by No. 8 Oklahoma State vs. Colorado. The Buffaloes, picked to finish third by the media in the Pac-12 Conference, just missed the preseason coaches ranking, finishing four spots outside the Top 25, and listed among “others receiving votes.”

The doubleheader, played at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, benefits Coaches vs. Cancer, an initiative spearheaded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society. The event is managed by bd Global, LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing firm.

“Where else can fans catch four teams at a destination location like the MGM Grand on one of the biggest sports Saturdays in December?” said Fran Fraschilla, an analyst for ESPN, which will televise the doubleheader. “All four of the teams will contend for their conference title, and all four will likely play into the second week of the NCAA Tournament.”

The talent among the four teams is strong as well, led by Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart, who many thought would have been a top NBA pick had he turned pro this past spring. Just this week, the AP also chose Smart as its only unanimous selection to its Preseason All-America team. At the MGM, Smart will be in action along with New Mexico’s Kendall Williams, the Mountain West Player of the Year last season, Marquette’s Davante Gardner, and Colorado’s Spencer Dinwiddie, who has been ranked as one of the nation’s top-25 returning players. The event’s talent level has nearly every NBA team sending scouts for the event along with several NBA general managers have made requests for credentials as well.

Tickets range from $30 – $250 (courtside seating), not including applicable service charges and taxes, and are on-sale at all Las Vegas Ticketmaster locations (select Smith’s Food and Drug Centers and Ritmo Latino). Ticket sales are limited to eight (8) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available for purchase at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com. Southwest Florida to host inaugural Gulf Coast Showcase

LEXINGTON, KY – Sixteen NCAA Division I basketball programs will descend upon Southwest Florida this Thanksgiving as the inaugural Gulf Coast Showcase is staged at the Germain Arena in Estero, Fla. The men’s eight-team tournament, designed to showcase the top mid-major programs from across the country, will be held Nov. 25-27; it will be immediately followed by an eight-team women’s tournament from Nov. 29-Dec. 1. bd Global, LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing firm, is managing the weeklong event. An additional six teams will participate as “Opening Game” opponents.

“We are excited to showcase these quality programs in the inaugural Gulf Coast Showcase,” said Brooks Downing, president of bd Global. “We had been considering this market to launch a premium event of this nature, and after Florida Gulf Coast made its magical run last March, we were convinced that the Fort Myers-Naples area would be the ideal destination location to create a signature event.”

The tournament figures to be a boon for the local economy attracting fans from around the country. While the games will be played at Germain Arena, the Waldorf Astoria Naples serves as the host resort for teams.

“We are thrilled to have so many good schools represented in the inaugural Gulf Coast Showcase, said Craig Brush, president of Germain Arena. “We are convinced that this will become one of the premier college basketball events in the country as well as a fixture on the Southwest Florida sports fan’s calendar.”

The men’s field is led by Louisiana Tech (Western Athletic Conference), a 27-7 team last season that finished the season ranked 51st nationally in RPI. Wagner (Northeast) and St. Bonaventure (Atlantic 10) both ranked among the top-150 in RPI a year ago while San Diego (West Coast) finished at No. 158. UNC Greensboro (Southern), UIC (Horizon League), Southern Illinois (Missouri Valley) and Stetson (Atlantic Sun) round out the tournament field. Centenary College, Roosevelt University, Greensboro College, San Diego Christian and Missouri S&T will play “Opening Games” as part of the event.

“The tournament format allows everyone a shot at a championship, which is nice,” said Mike White, head coach at Louisiana Tech. “Playing three games in three days should help prepare all of us for our conference tournaments. In addition, the quality of the programs in the field bode well for tremendous competition as it prepares us all for conference play. Very good conferences and programs will be represented.”

The women’s tournament will be hailed as one of the nation’s top events in its inaugural year. UCLA (Pac-12) spent all last season ranked in the Top-25 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Middle Tennessee State also earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Sun Belt Conference. Mississippi State and NC State bring star power from the Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference respectively. James Madison (Colonial), Wright State (Horizon), Grand Canyon (WAC) and Southeastern Louisiana (Southland) complete the tournament field. Marian University will join the fold as an “Opening Game” participant.

“We are so excited to participate in the Gulf Coast Showcase,” said Cori Close, head coach at UCLA. “With great competition, a beautiful location, and wonderful growth opportunities for our student-athletes, I feel very fortunate to be able to represent UCLA in this spectacular event.”

“I’m thrilled to partner with my long time friend Brooks Downing and bd Global to bring a competitive women’s basketball tournament to the Ft Myers/Naples area. ,” said Debbie Antonelli, ESPN analyst and Tournament Director of the women’s event. “Each of these eight teams brings an intense, hard working, offensive-minded style of play that will be entertaining for fans. I think the coaches will agree that this tournament will simulate post-season play, especially given the competitive field that has been put together.”

Ticket and hotel packages for both tournaments are now available at www.gulfcoastshowcase.com. For group sales or sponsorship opportunities, interested parties should contact bd Global at 859-951-6141.

bdG announces Roundball Showcase round-robin event

LEXINGTON, KY – Seven teams will compete over two weeks in November in the round-robin Roundball Showcase, announced Saturday by bd Global. Western Kentucky, Marshall and East Tennessee State lead the field as “host programs” for the event with Stephen F. Austin, Samford, UNC Wilmington and Campbellsville (Ky.) rounding out the field. All 13 games of the event will be played Nov. 16-30 as regulated by the NCAA’s rules on multi-team exempt events.

bd Global, LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing firm, is managing the event. The Roundball Showcase is one of six bdG college basketball events for the 2013-14 season which include the MGM Grand Showcase in Las Vegas, the Tip-Off Showcase in Dallas and the Lone Star Showcase in Houston.

“This region of the country boasts terrific basketball programs and to have WKU, Marshall and ETSU anchor this event makes this a very competitive Roundball Showcase,” said Brooks Downing, president of bd Global. “There are some great match-ups within this schedule of games between teams who will likely be NCAA Tournament-bound come March.”

WKU head coach Ray Harper adds six new players to a Hilltoppers’ roster than returns four starters from an NCAA Tournament team. Last season, Western Kentucky won the school’s second Sun Belt Conference Tournament title in as many years. Harper, one of the nation’ most distinguished head coaches with a 363-76 career coaching record, has won four national titles at the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels to go along with his two NCAA Tournament appearances at WKU.

Under the event format, WKU will have to play at Marshall, which will be led by Elijah Pittman, the Herd’s leading scorer last season at 16.1 points per game. The 6-9 senior led all Conference USA newcomers in scoring in 2012-13 after joining MU from Lamar State College-Port Arthur. Head coach Tom Herrion looks to return to post-season play after posting consecutive 20-win seasons in his first two seasons in Huntington.

Veteran head coach Murry Bartow has built East Tennessee State into one of the top mid-major programs in the country. His Buccaneers must play at WKU while playing host to Marshall to round out the event.  In 10 seasons at ETSU, he had led the Bucs to 189 wins, four conference titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances. This season marks the school’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference before re-joining the Southern Conference in 2014.

Stephen F. Austin, led by first-year head coach Brad Underwood, finished last year with a 27-5 mark and won the Southland regular season conference title. Underwood was previously the top assistant under Frank Martin at both South Carolina and Kansas State. Samford’s Bennie Seltzer, a former top aide for Tom Crean at Indiana, is looking for similar success in his second year with the Bulldogs.

Buzz Peterson enters his fourth year in charge at UNC Wilmington and his 15th year overall as a head coach. The former UNC star alongside teammate Michael Jordan has four conference titles on his resume and led Tulsa to the 2001 NIT crown. Campbellsville University, an NAIA power from Campbellsville, KY, rounds out the field with games at UNCW and Samford.

Lone Star Showcase in Houston announced

HOUSTON – The college basketball madness of March will come early when Toyota Center plays host to the Lone Star Showcase this December. The premium doubleheader on Dec. 21, 2013 features Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma in a nationally televised Big 12-SEC Challenge game and Houston vs. Rice in a crosstown showdown. The event is managed by bd Global, LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing firm that is also running college basketball events in Las Vegas, Dallas and Southwest Florida for the 2013-14 season.

“We are excited to return to the state of Texas and highlight three of the Lone Star State’s best programs as well as an outstanding Oklahoma squad,” said Brooks Downing, president of bd Global, the event promoter. “Having these four programs with such close proximity to each other and long histories in each rivalry, it will be an electric atmosphere on that Saturday at Toyota Center.”

The Texas A&M-Oklahoma game will be the concluding contest of the inaugural Big 12-SEC Challenge, a 10-game series put together by the two leagues and ESPN. The game will be televised nationally to 75 million homes at 6:00 p.m. CT on ESPNU. Houston-Rice will tip at 3:30 p.m. CT with television to be announced at a later date.

Texas A&M returns three starters from an 18-15 campaign in Billy Kennedy’s second season in College Station. Senior guard Fabyon Harris leads the Aggies as the team’s top returning scorer at 12.0 points per game. Additionally, 6-9 junior Kourtney Roberson and sophomore guard J-Mychal Reese are both expected to be standouts for A&M.

Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger adds six new players to his Sooners squad that went 20-12 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Buddy Hield is the team’s leading returner in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. He also was the recipient of the team’s Most Inspirational Player Award last year.

Veteran coach James Dickey has reinvigorated the Houston program and led the Cougars to a 20-13 mark last season. This season, UofH will move into the American Athletic Conference with four players that were ranked among the nation’s top 100 prospects by ESPN. Sophomore guard Danuel House was ranked No. 15 in 2012 and is joined by redshirt freshman guard Danrad Knowles (No. 56 in 2012), Baylor transfer L.J. Rose (No. 63 in 2012) and junior forward TaShawn Thomas (No. 92 in 2011).

Heading into 2013-14, Rice looks to build toward similar success as coach Ben Braun sets the foundation with one of the nation’s youngest rosters with 11 freshmen and sophomores on the squad. The Owls will be bolstered by returning starters Austin Ramljak (6-3 senior guard), Seth Gearhart (6-7 junior forward) and Max Guercy (5-9 sophomore guard).

“The Road Begins” at the Tip-Off Showcase in Dallas

DALLAS – While “the Road to the Final Four” will end at AT&T Stadium next April, the road also “begins” in Dallas at the Tip-Off Showcase on Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 at American Airlines Center. The opening day of college basketball season will feature a tripleheader with Oklahoma vs. Alabama, SMU vs. TCU and Baylor vs. Colorado. The event is managed by bd Global, LLC, a Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing firm that is also running college basketball events in Las Vegas, Houston and Southwest Florida for the 2013-14 season. This marks the third time the group has played a college basketball event at the AAC in the past four years.

“Launching a true college basketball tip-off event is not only exciting but an idea that is long overdue,” said Brooks Downing, president of bd Global, the event promoter. “We are excited to open up the new season with three great games featuring tremendous regional programs and national talent. I think this is going to be a special day in Dallas for basketball fans.”

The action tips with an Oklahoma-Alabama match-up between two teams that each won more than 20 games last season. OU, which plays football the night before at Baylor, adds six new players to a hoops squad that finished 20-12 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Buddy Hield is the Sooner’s top returner in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. Alabama returns three starters from a 23-13 campaign, including leading scorer Trevor Releford (14.9 points), as well as Rodney Cooper (10.2 points) and Levi Randolph (8.1 points).

Metroplex bragging rights will be on the line when the annual SMU-TCU rivalry moves to American Airlines Center. Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown has immediately reinvigorated the SMU program and returns all five starters from last season with Jalen Jones (14.0 points and 7.7 rebounds) and Nick Russell (14.0 points and 3.8 assists) leading the way. TCU coach Trent Johnson, also in his second year, is looking for similar success in transforming the Horned Frogs into a Big 12 power. TCU returns leading scorer Kyan Anderson (12.0 points) and adds six new players to the program.

An old rivalry will be renewed when Colorado invades Dallas to face Baylor. An NCAA Tournament team last year, Colorado returns four starters with one of the nation’s best backcourts in Askia Booker and Spencer Dinwiddie. Baylor returns the bulk of a squad that won the NIT championship and touts two future pros in Isaiah Austin and Cory Jefferson. The rivalry between the former Big 12 foes continues to escalate with the teams splitting games over the past two years (Baylor beat CU in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and Colorado knocked off the Bears in last year’s Charleston Classic).

Tickets ranging from $29 – $199 (courtside seating), not including applicable service charges and taxes, go on sale Thursday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. at American Airlines Center Box Office, Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or by phone at 800-745-3000. Pre-sale tickets are currently on-sale for Citi cardholders at www.citiprivatepass.com and “preferred tickets” will be available for cardholders starting on Sept. 5th.
