Vegas 16 announces Tournament Committee

LAS VEGAS – Entering the final month of the regular season, college basketball teams are beginning to focus their attention on March Madness options, and among them, the new Vegas 16, a 16-team post-season tournament played at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, March 26-30.

Organizers have selected a group of individuals to serve on its inaugural “men’s basketball tournament committee.” The committee’s roles will include team selection, seeding the bracket and consulting on event management.

The committee will be chaired by former Arizona and UNLV Director of Athletics Jim Livengood. Livengood, who resides in Las Vegas, is a former chairman of the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. He is joined on the committee by the following:

  • George Raveling – Director of International Basketball and Global Sports Marketing for Nike Basketball and a former college head coach who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015
  • Debbie Antonelli – Former NC State student-athlete and current analyst for men’s and women’s college basketball on ESPN, CBS, Fox, Raycom Sports and Westwood One
  • John Balistere – Basketball consultant for MGM Resorts International and current head coach at Boulder City High School (Nev.)
  • Brooks Downing – President & CEO, bd Global (Tournament Promoter)

“I truly believe the Vegas 16 is one of the most exciting initiatives to happen to NCAA post-season basketball in many, many years,” Livengood said. “We have assembled an A-list committee who are some of the most influential people in basketball. This will be an absolute home run.”

Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament field is March 13 and organizers expect to announce the Vegas 16 bracket shortly thereafter. The event, which tips off March 26 and is similar to the post-season NIT, features 16 teams playing a single-elimination tournament over five days in one location. The action tips 13 days following the field announcement to give teams and fans ample time to schedule travel to Las Vegas.

Downing, whose company manages three other college basketball events during the regular season in Las Vegas, said, “This is much like a bowl game in many respects. There will be ancillary activities for the teams and fans upon arrival, the event gives our teams two extra weeks of practice, and it culminates in a world-class city on a high-profile stage.”

An announcement on a national television broadcast partner is expected in the coming days. Full info on the Vegas 16 can be found at www.vegas16.com or follow on Twitter at @VegasSixteen.

NCAA Division I Basketball bound for Vancouver in 2017

VANCOUVER, B.C.Premier basketball is back in Vancouver.

Local officials, along with U.S.-based bd Global, announced that eight men’s and eight women’s basketball teams will descend upon the 2010 Olympic City in November 2017 and annually during the American Thanksgiving holiday week. During this week, National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be played back-to-back under the iconic sails of the Vancouver Convention Centre.

The Vancouver Convention Centre’s exhibition space will be transformed into a 3,000-plus seat venue, complete with portable bleachers, portable floor, goals (baskets), and video boards to provide a first-class fan experience at every game.

“Vancouver has proven itself as a world-class destination for major sporting events, so we are very excited to bring the first regular-season NCAA Division I college basketball tournaments ever played in Canada to this extraordinary city,” said Brooks Downing, president and CEO of bd Global. “Given the destination, combined with our unique site at the Vancouver Convention Centre, this annual event will be very successful for years to come.”

bd Global manages multiple events across the U.S. from South Florida to Las Vegas. This year alone, the firm will be responsible for more than 100 NCAA Division I college basketball games. The idea for the Vancouver event came from two locals – David Munro, a former Vancouver Grizzlies official, and Howard Kelsey, who has been involved with Canadian basketball at nearly every level for the past four decades since he played for Team Canada. Both will serve as co-tournament directors.

“This is likely Vancouver’s biggest elite basketball-related news since the NBA announced that the Grizzlies franchise was awarded to Vancouver,” said Kelsey, who is the co-founder of the CDN National Teams Alumni Association.

“The 2011 NCAA game that we co-hosted between Gonzaga and Hawaii proved that Vancouver is more than ready to play host to an additional big-time event,” added Munro, who currently works at the Sports Institute. “Our Vancouver Showcase will feature exciting NCAA men’s and women’s basketball in an unprecedented setting on an annual basis for the City of Vancouver.”

The recently announced Sport Hosting Vancouver partnership between the City of Vancouver, Tourism Vancouver, the Vancouver Convention Centre, the Vancouver Hotel Destination Association, and the University of British Columbia was a key reason bd Global selected Vancouver to host this premier event. Sport Hosting Vancouver industry partners work together to identify and attract major events that deliver economic and social benefits to the community and connect event owners with local expertise. Having played host to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Davis Cup and the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, annual destination events such as the Vancouver Basketball Showcase tournaments are a great addition to Vancouver’s sport hosting resume.

“Today’s announcement is the start of another exciting chapter for playing host to great sports events in Vancouver,” said Michelle Collens, manager of Sport Hosting Vancouver. “It was the collaborative effort of our local sport tourism industry partners that saw the success of this inaugural event come to fruition. The Vancouver Basketball Showcase will strengthen Vancouver’s reputation as a world-class city for major events.”

Similar basketball tournaments in other U.S. cities have created a strong marketing platform throughout the U.S. while increasing economic activity.

“Sporting events play an important role in stimulating tourism demand,” said Ty Speer, Tourism Vancouver’s president & CEO. “Growing the number of major annual sporting events taking place in our city is one of Tourism Vancouver’s goals, as well as an outcome of the Tourism Master Plan. We see this as a huge opportunity for developing tourism in Vancouver and are pleased and proud that our city is hosting this exciting event.”

In addition to airlifting in 16 teams annually from across the United States, the event is expected to drive “heads in beds” with fan travel, media, international broadcast production groups and game officials, requiring multiple hotels to be involved as hosts.

“Vancouver continues to look for opportunities to host first-class sporting events,” said Russ Cowan, executive director of the Vancouver Hotel Destination Association. “Our 35 downtown Vancouver member hotels are pleased to be a major supporter of the Vancouver Basketball Showcase. This unique tournament will not only bring visitors from many key markets in the USA, but will also showcase Vancouver as a world-class destination through media coverage broadcasting the event.”

Transforming the Vancouver Convention Centre into a basketball venue once again shows the flexibility of the renowned venue that attracts more international meetings and conventions than any other city in North America.

NCAA Division I basketball players represent highest level of intercollegiate athletics in the United States. Schools in this division include the major collegiate athletic powers, with larger budgets, more elaborate facilities, and more athletic scholarships than other divisions. bd Global has worked with such programs like Kentucky, Duke, Gonzaga and Michigan State on the men’s side, and Connecticut, Stanford, Baylor and UCLA in women’s basketball. NCAA bylaws permit a team to play in any one tournament – commonly referred to as a multiple-team event or “MTE” in NCAA lingo – once every four years. As an example, if Washington were to play in 2017, the Huskies could not play again until 2021.

“The beauty of the most common format used for these events is that every team will play multiple games in Vancouver as the tournaments will be structured with a winners and consolation bracket,” Downing said. “And since a team can only make a trek here once every four years, we’ll be hitting 64 different U.S. markets every 48 months. That’s a significant marketing approach that we think will drive future out-of-market tourism for Vancouver and the region.”

Teams for the inaugural event in 2017 will be announced at a later date. Organizers expect part if not all of the event to be televised in both the U.S. and Canada.

bd Global announces new 16-team postseason tournament in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – For the first time, a season-ending college basketball tournament will be played in Las Vegas when the new “Vegas 16” tips off this upcoming March. The new 16-team event serves as the finale of a busy college basketball season in Las Vegas and will be managed by Lexington, Ky.-based sports marketing firm bd Global, which also manages two events currently at the MGM Grand Garden Arena: the Men Who Speak Up Main Event, an eight-team Thanksgiving week tournament, and the MGM Grand Showcase, which is played each December and benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.

The new Vegas 16 tournament, similar to the Postseason NIT, features 16 teams playing a single-elimination tournament on March 26-30, 2016 at Cox Pavilion on UNLV’s campus. All 16 teams will be housed at resort properties on the Las Vegas Strip. The tournament field and seeding will be announced shortly after the NCAA Tournament announcement on Selection Sunday. The action then tips 13 days later to give teams and fans ample time to schedule travel to Las Vegas.

“While the NCAA Tournament continues to rule Madness, there’s been a real need to create an affordable, attractive event at a destination location for teams who have had a terrific season yet were unable to qualify as one of the top 68 programs on Selection Sunday,” said Brooks Downing, President and CEO of bd Global. “Our research indicates we will attract high-quality programs with this simplistic approach. This will be a premium event in one premium location.”

While there are seven men’s and women’s postseason conference tournaments held in Las Vegas on an annual basis, this will be the first true post-conference tournament event held in the city. Current NCAA Bylaws prohibit NCAA-sponsored events from being held in states with legalized sports gambling. However, there is a proposal from the Mountain West Conference under review now by NCAA membership to remove that provision. Las Vegas has become the unofficial “capital of basketball,” as multiple basketball events are played there annually, including premier high school and summer AAU events, college basketball in-season events, USA Basketball training camps and exhibitions, and the popular NBA Summer League.

“The Vegas 16 offers an intriguing new opportunity for postseason college basketball,” said Jim Livengood, former NCAA athletic director for nearly 30 years at Arizona, Washington State, UNLV and Southern Illinois. “The destination of Las Vegas is so powerful because fans want to be here that time of year and it will only enhance the playing experience for the student-athletes and all those involved with the programs. This also makes sense for many of the schools financially as hosting home games this time of the year can become a fiscal burden. We’re excited to see this become a reality for so many different reasons.”

Livengood, who is a former chairman of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament selection committee, recently retired from UNLV and spends time consulting in college athletics. One of his focuses is on growing the footprint of college athletics in the Las Vegas market. “There are so many things this great destination can do to support college athletics and the student-athlete experience,” said Livengood about Las Vegas.

Organizers indicated that most, if not all, of the Vegas 16 will be televised nationally. Full info on Vegas 16 can be found at www.vegas16.com and on Twitter at @VegasSixteen.

Main Event, Showcase Welcome New Sponsors

MGM Grand will play host to two early season events this season and the action tips with the Men Who Speak Up Main Event on Nov. 23-25, 2015. The eight-team event features Clemson, Creighton, Rutgers and UMass competing in the “Heavyweight Bracket” while Central Arkansas, Howard, Texas Southern and UTSA battle each other in the “Middleweight Bracket.” All eight teams will be in action on Monday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week with four games each day at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The Main Event also will highlight Movember, an annual campaign in November challenging men to grow moustaches to spark conversations and raise funding for men’s health issues. As part of the Main Event, 500 tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis to men wearing moustaches to the tournament.

Men Who Speak Up (www.menwhospeakup.com) is an educational initiative from Bayer Healthcare that raises the collective voices of prostate cancer to increase awareness about the condition and the importance of recognizing the symptoms of advancing disease. In the United States, prostate cancer is the second-most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and a leading cause of cancer death in men. In recent years, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, Texas Tech’s Tubby Smith and Sacramento Kings head coach George Karl have all battled prostate cancer. Old Dominion head coach Jeff Jones was diagnosed this past May and the Southeastern Conference is currently raising awareness and honoring former SEC commissioner Mike Slive with “Prostate Cancer Awareness Games” throughout the September college football slate. Slive battled prostate cancer during his career with the league.

“The symptoms of advancing prostate cancer can serve as an important warning sign for men to speak up and take action, but all too often men keep quiet when it matters most,” said Shannon Campbell, Vice President and General Manager of Oncology, Bayer HealthCare. “Through Men Who Speak Up, we hope to create a national movement to help men become more comfortable having these conversations with their doctors – and Movember, with its emphasis on conversation, is a perfect time to start.  We are pleased to be partnering with some of the biggest names in college basketball to continue getting the word out and to show men that speaking up about their cancer symptoms is a sign of strength.”

The basketball action returns 10 days later when UNLV faces Pac-12 power Oregon in the MGM Grand Showcase, which benefits Coaches vs. Cancer, an initiative spearheaded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (www.nabc.com) and the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org). The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and is expected to sell-out the 13,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena as UNLV has included the ticket in its home season ticket offering. The game is played at the Grand Garden while the Runnin’ Rebels are out of their home court, the Thomas & Mack Center, due to the National Finals Rodeo.
