Baylor, UCLA, Virginia & Illinois bound for ’22 Roman Main Event

LAS VEGAS – The past two NCAA Champions – Baylor and Virginia – will join UCLA and Illinois in a heavyweight, four-team field for next season’s Roman Main Event in Las Vegas. The four schools own a total of 13 NCAA Championships and 28 Final Four appearances. Tournament organizer, bdG Sports, announced the field during the Michigan-Arizona championship game today at the 2021 event.

The four powerhouse programs will descend upon Las Vegas next season with the first round on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022 at T-Mobile Arena. The championship and consolation games will be played on Sunday, Nov. 20. The annual tournament will be televised by ESPN networks and benefits Coaches vs. Cancer, an initiative spearheaded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (www.nabc.com) and the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).

“This event has really matured into one of the most competitive in-season college basketball events in the sport,” said Brooks Downing, President and CEO of bdG Sports, the event owner and operator. “We are so excited to have four championship basketball programs headed to one of the best facilities in the nation in the middle of a world-class destination location.”

Baylor will be back in pursuit of a national title after signing Keyonte George, the nation’s No. 3-ranked prospect in the Class of 2022. Coach Scott Drew’s Bears won their first two games of last year’s pandemic-altered season at T-Mobile Arena in the #VegasBubble to kick-off its 2021 title run.

UCLA, currently ranked No. 2 nationally, is no stranger to Las Vegas. In addition to the Pac-12 Tournament, the Bruins are playing four games in Las Vegas in this year’s regular season (Bellarmine, Gonzaga, North Carolina and a road game at UNLV). Coach Mick Cronin has quickly re-established the program on the national stage and took the Bruins to the school’s 19th Final Four last season.

Virginia won the title in 2019, prior to the 2020 season coming to an early end due to the COVID outbreak, and should contend for another ACC title this season. Coach Tony Bennett has established the Cavaliers as an annual contender for the national title.

Illinois finished the 2020-21 season as one of the four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Brad Underwood continues to lead the Illini’s resurgence, and the squad is ranked 10th in the country and among the favorites to win the always difficult Big Ten Tournament. .

Roman Main Event announces “Starting Five” of player ambassadors

LAS VEGAS – This year for the first time, participating players in the Roman Main Event have signed “name, image and likeness” agreements to promote the four-team tournament to be played November 19/21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Tournament promoter, bdG Sports, announced its “Starting Five” Ambassadors today which are:

  • Dalen Terry – @dalenn on Instagram / @dalenterry on Twitter
  • Adrien Nunez – @adrien_nunez on Instagram / @nunezadrien on Twitter
  • Dexter Dennis – @ldl_dex on Instagram and Twitter
  • Bryce Hamilton – @b_ham13 on Instagram / @bham_10 on Twitter
  • Hunter Dickinson – @hunter.dickinson1 on Instagram / @h_dickinson24 on Twitter

The players have been enlisted to promote the tournament on social media and are the first participating athletes to be used in such a role after a number of state laws were adopted effectively ending the NCAA’s rules that prohibited such opportunities.

“We are excited to have Bryce, Dalen, Dexter, Adrien and Hunter as part of our team as we launch this new Ambassadors program,” said Tournament Director Jon Albaugh. “We encourage fans of each participating team to follow our Ambassadors on social media and keep an eye out for tournament promotions and special offers that only will be announced by the athletes.”

Exclusive offers for Arizona and Wichita State fans were announced this past weekend by Dalen Terry and Dexter Dennis. Arizona fans are able to save 20% off tickets by using promo code DALEN at AXS.com or T-MobileArena.com. Shocker fans can use promo code DEXTER for the same offer in the Wichita State fan sections. Additional offers targeted toward Michigan and UNLV fans will be announced by the respective ambassadors in the coming weeks.

The Roman Main Event tips on Friday, Nov. 19 with Arizona vs. Wichita State at 7 p.m. PT followed by UNLV vs. Michigan at 9:30 p.m. Sunday’s championship game will tip at 6:30 p.m. to be followed by the consolation game at 9 p.m. The event, now in its eighth year, benefits Coaches vs. Cancer, an initiative spearheaded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (www.nabc.com) and the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).

Tickets for the two-day tournament start at $29 per day and two-day packages are available starting at $49 (prices are inclusive of tax and facility fee). Tickets can be purchased at www.tmobilearena.com or www.axs.com. Tickets will allow access to both games on the given day.

Complete tournament information can be found at www.romanmainevent.com and on social media at @VegasMainEvent. Tournament hotel rates are available now via the website. Matchups set for Roman Main Event: UNLV vs. Michigan & Arizona vs. Wichita State

LAS VEGAS – In Las Vegas, it doesn’t usually take 25 years for a “Main Event” trilogy to come about. College basketball fans, however, will see just that when Michigan comes west to battle UNLV in the first round of the Roman Main Event on Friday, Nov. 19 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The highly anticipated matchup will be the second semifinal, following the Arizona-Wichita State opener earlier that evening. The championship and consolation will then be played on Sunday, Nov. 21.

The Wolverines, who at mid-summer were ranked No. 5 in the nation by Sports Illustrated, have twice played UNLV in holiday tournaments in Las Vegas, and have fallen both times to the Runnin’ Rebels, first in 1976 and most recently in 1995. But for the 2021-22 season, Michigan is predicted to be the best team in the Big Ten Conference, thanks to a recruiting class rated No. 1 by 247Sports. UNLV is retooling with behind new Coach Kevin Kruger and a roster featuring six transfers, including four from the Big 12 Conference.

The Michigan-UNLV game will tip at 9:30 p.m. PT and follows the 7 p.m. opener which features new Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd and his Wildcats taking on Wichita State, which is led by Coach Isaac Brown who took over the Shockers’ program in midseason last year. Sunday’s championship game is set for 6:30 p.m. PT followed by the consolation game at 9 p.m. PT.

“Without question, this field is one of the best in-season tournaments in college basketball next season,” said Brooks Downing, bdG Sports founder and CEO. “We have four great basketball brands, and while Michigan may be at the top of the rankings during the preseason, the other three teams bring in top young coaches and superb talent, and as we all know, when they meet at a world-class neutral site, any one of the four could be crowned champion on Sunday.”

The full schedule for the tournament, including television broadcast networks, is as follows:

Friday, Nov. 19

  • 7 p.m. – Arizona vs. Wichita State (ESPNU)
  • 9:30 p.m. – UNLV vs. Michigan (ESPN2)

Sunday, Nov. 21

  • 6:30 p.m. – Championship Game (ESPN)
  • 9 p.m. – Consolation Game (ESPN2)

Veteran Las Vegas promoter bdG Sports is managing the event, as well as the sold-out Duke vs. Gonzaga showdown in the Continental Tire Challenge presented by Ameritas on Nov. 26 at T-Mobile Arena.

Since launching in 2014, the Roman Main Event has blossomed into one of the premier early season tournaments in college basketball. The event benefits Coaches vs.

Rates are available for ARIA, Park MGM, MGM Grand and New York-New York. All resorts are a short walking distance to T-Mobile Arena.

24 college basketball teams bound for Southwest Florida in the Gulf Coast Showcase and Naples Invitational

ESTERO, Fla. – College basketball returns to Southwest Florida this November when the ninth-annual Gulf Coast Showcase tips off at Hertz Arena bringing 16 teams to the market Thanksgiving week. And for 2021, tournament operator bdG Sports also is launching the Naples Invitational, a new eight-team tournament held at the Community School of Naples.

The action tips with the Gulf Coast Showcase men’s tournament on Nov. 22-24 at Hertz Arena. The eight-team tournament will be headlined by defending Sun Belt Tournament champion and NCAA Tournament participant App State, a Vermont program that has won five straight America East titles (regular season or tournament) and Mid-American Conference power Akron. The men’s tournament starts on Monday, Nov. 22 with the following pairings:

  • 11 a.m. ET – Rice vs. Evansville
  • 1:30 p.m. ET – Vermont vs. Oakland
  • 5 p.m. ET – Akron vs. Fordham
  • 7:30 p.m. ET – App State vs. Delaware

Game times for Tuesday and Wednesday will be the same with semifinal games on Nov. 23 at 5:00/7:30. Wednesday’s championship game will tip at 7:30 p.m.

After a day-off on Thanksgiving, the women’s tournament tips on Friday, Nov. 26 headlined by NCAA Tournament participants UCLA, Iowa State and South Dakota State. The women’s tournament still owns the reputation as the premier women’s in-season event in all of college basketball. Past champions include UConn (2014 Gulf Coast Showcase champion), Stanford (2015), Baylor (2016), Notre Dame (2017), Texas (2018) and Gonzaga (2019).

“Since its inception, the Gulf Coast Showcase has attracted the very best in women’s college basketball,” said Women’s Tournament Director and CBS/ESPN analyst Debbie Antonelli. “I fully expect to see six or seven teams in this year’s field playing in the NCAA Tournament in March and our champion competing for a Final Four berth.”

The first-round pairings for this year’s women’s tournament are as follows:

  • 11 a.m. ET – South Dakota State vs. UMass
  • 1:30 p.m. ET – UCLA vs. Kent State
  • 5 p.m. ET – Iowa State vs. Charlotte
  • 7:30 p.m. ET – Penn State vs. St. John’s

Game times for Saturday and Sunday will be the same as the men’s tournament.

The Gulf Coast Showcase will once again support the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The hospital is the only children’s hospital between Tampa and Miami and provides vital health care for the region’s sick and injured children and their families. The hospital’s facility provides 300,000 square feet of space, 128 pediatric and NICU beds, a 17-bay emergency department, a freestanding pediatric pharmacy and in-hospital school classroom.

Naples Invitational Tips on Nov. 22

The Naples Invitational field also is limited strictly to mid-major programs and the eight-team field will feature a strong slate of games for the first-year event. Seven of the eight teams have earned NCAA Tournament bids in the past decade including ETSU (won the SoCon Tournament title in 2020 before the postseason was cancelled due to COVID-19), Murray State led by NBA star Ja Morrant in 2019, Wright State in 2018 and Kent State in 2017.

The tournament will be played Nov. 22-24 at the Community School of Naples where the venue has a college-length floor and shot clocks. The first-round pairings for the Naples Invitational are:

  • 12 p.m. ET – Kent State vs. James Madison
  • 2:30 p.m. ET – Wright State vs. George Washington
  • 5:30 p.m. ET – ETSU vs. Murray State
  • 8:00 p.m. ET – Missouri State vs. Long Beach State

Tuesday’s semifinals will be played at 5:30/8:00 with the championship game being held on Wednesday night.

With two dozen teams visiting Southwest Florida during a holiday week, the expected economic impact will be significant as the destination location continues to recover from the pandemic.

“With the Gulf Coast Showcase serving as one of the oldest college basketball tournaments in the Sunshine State, we’re excited to be planning the 2021 events to have full fields and with typical crowds once again,” said Brooks Downing, CEO of bdG Sports. “Last year, we were one of the few event operators that staged games during the pandemic and kept our teams 100 percent safe and continuing to play, all thanks to the Covid-free #BeachBubble we created. To have 16 teams in Fort Myers and meet a growing demand by creating an additional eight-team men’s event in Naples will likely bring a $2 million impact to the area. It’s an exciting day for basketball fans on the Gulf Coast and we’re excited to create that massive of an impact in an area we call home.”

Louisville, Maryland, Stanford, NC State among 19 men’s & women’s NCAA teams bound for “Baha Mar Hoops” during Thanksgiving week

NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – Baha Mar, the leading resort destination in The Bahamas, revealed today 19 NCAA men’s and women’s teams who will participate in the newly announced “Baha Mar Hoops” event, making it the largest early season event in all of college basketball. The weeklong slate of games is headlined on the men’s side by Louisville and Maryland and on the women’s side by defending National Champion Stanford and two top-5 teams in Maryland and NC State. In total, 23 games will be played across three events during the U.S. Thanksgiving week, Nov. 22-27 at the Baha Mar Convention Center.

“We are thrilled to welcome the men’s and women’s NCAA teams for the first-ever Baha Mar Hoops event,” said Graeme Davis, President, Baha Mar. “At the heart of the resort destination is our determination to inspire the youth from around the world. We have designed Baha Mar facilities and offerings with the intention of hosting events such as Baha Mar Hoops and look forward to watching these impressive collegiate athletes play basketball in the beautiful Bahamas.”

A mere 55-minute flight from Florida, Baha Mar opened in 2017 and is home to three iconic brands: Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood. Situated on 1,000 acres overlooking Nassau’s famous Cable Beach, the resort destination features more than 2,300 rooms and an abundance of dynamic programming, activities, and amenities including the largest casino in the Caribbean, a state-of-the-art convention center, an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, the Caribbean’s first and only flagship ESPA spa, a collection of more than 40 restaurants and lounges, and more. The $200 million luxury water park, Baha Bay debuted in July 2021 as the latest addition to Baha Mar’s portfolio of spectacular guest offerings. Set on 15 beachfront acres, Baha Bay has introduced an exciting array of aquatic activities and experiences, alfresco dining, a gaming pavilion, beach club, and more.

The basketball action tips on Monday, Nov. 22 with the eight-team “Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship.” The men’s tournament, which is designed strictly for mid-major NCAA Division I programs, is in its fourth iteration after launching in 2017. The field is headlined by Abilene Christian, which won the Southland Conference title last season and upset #3-seed Texas in the NCAA Tournament’s First Round. The opening round pairings for the Nassau Championship are as follows:

  • 12 p.m. ET – Toledo vs. Charlotte
  • 2:30 p.m. – Drexel vs. Tulane
  • 5:30 p.m. – Abilene Christian vs. Jacksonville State
  • 8 p.m. – Coastal Carolina vs. Valparaiso

Consolation games will be played Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 12 p.m./2:30 p.m. followed by the semifinals at 5:30 p.m./8 p.m. Wednesday’s championship game will be at 8 p.m. ET. All 12 games of the Nassau Championship will be broadcast on FloHoops.

Bahamas Championship

Four of the top programs in college basketball next season then will compete in the “Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship” on Nov. 25/27. Maryland is expected to once again be a Top-25 team next season for Coach Mark Turgeon. The Terps return three starters from last season’s NCAA Tournament squad and add two key transfers in center Qudus Wahab from Georgetown and point guard Fatts Russell from Rhode Island. The Terrapins will face one of the nation’s most experienced teams in Richmond which returns all of last year’s roster sans one starter and will feature four returning “super seniors.” The Spiders were one of the “last teams out” of last season’s NCAA Tournament despite having wins over Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Loyola-Chicago.

Excitement is high in Starkville for a Mississippi State program primed for a strong run this season. Coach Ben Howland’s program returns its leading scorer (Iverson Molinar), the SEC’s leading rebounder (Tolu Smith) and adds four transfers – Garrison Brooks, a three-year starter at North Carolina, D.J. Jeffries (Memphis), Rocket Watts (Michigan State) and Shakeel Moore (NC State). Louisville coach Chris Mack has had similar success reloading this off-season. The Cardinals return three starters but add seven newcomers including top-100 recruits Mike James and Roosevelt Wheeler, as well as Sydney Curry, a one-time Kansas commit before going the junior college route. Television broadcast information for the four games of the Bahamas Championship will be announced at a later date.

Pink Flamingo Championship

On schedule the same days as the Bahamas Championship, college basketball’s top women’s programs take the floor in the “Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship” starting on Thursday, Nov. 25 with six of the seven participating teams having played in last season’s NCAA Tournament. The majority of the teams will play two games each on Thursday/Saturday but defending NCAA champ Stanford will play three straight days, Thursday-Saturday. All seven games of the Pink Flamingo Championship will be broadcast on FloHoops.

The slate of games in the Pink Flamingo Championship will likely feature multiple top-10 clashes with Stanford, Maryland, NC State and Indiana all being projected to be elite programs next season. A Final Four-worthy doubleheader tips off the action with NC State facing Maryland and Indiana battling Stanford in the first two games of women’s action on Thursday. On Saturday, Stanford plays Maryland which could be a preview of the 2022 NCAA Tournament championship game as the two programs are projected to be top-five nationally in the preseason.

“In most early season events, you are lucky if you see one top-10 match-up; we may have three such games in Nassau,” said Women’s Tournament Director and ESPN analyst Debbie Antonelli. “In all my years in the game, I don’t know if I have ever seen so many quality teams in one field. Every game will have an NCAA Tournament level of play and several of these games will be on par with the Final Four. Fans are in for a treat with not only Baha Mar but the play on the court.”

The full schedule for Nov. 25-27 is as follows (game times to be announced):

Duke-Zags sold out as Continental Tire secures naming rights

LAS VEGAS – Continental Tire, headquartered in Fort Mill, South Carolina, will serve as the title sponsor of the highly anticipated match-up between Duke and Gonzaga in November as announced today by the event’s promoter bdG Sports. The “Continental Tire Challenge” –  the first college basketball event to sell out for the 2021-22 season – will feature the Blue Devils battling the Zags on Friday, Nov. 26, 2021 at T-Mobile Arena in front of a capacity crowd.

As a corporate supporter of college basketball athletics across the country, which includes a partnership with Duke Athletics, Continental Tire is a natural fit to title one of the biggest games in college basketball next season.

“There is an incredible amount of excitement surrounding this match-up as we have seen already, with the event selling out months in advance,” said Travis Roffler, Director of Marketing, Continental Tire. “We are thrilled to expand Continental Tire’s support of college basketball even further with this highly anticipated event.”

Duke returns to Las Vegas for the first time since 2016 when the Blue Devils played UNLV before a record  crowd of 19,107 in the first college basketball game at T-Mobile Arena. The crowd for the Continental Tire Challenge may be even larger as the last of public tickets were sold this week, nearly six months in advance of the showdown. The sellout includes the ticket allotment to Duke, which will go on sale first to Iron Dukes members beginning August 1. A limited number of standing-room only tickets on the Allegiant Flight Deck are now being made available to the public for $49 each at www.axs.com or  www.t-mobilearena.com.

“Continental Tire prides itself on ultra high-performance tires, and when you look at the match-up we have in Las Vegas – arguably the two best teams in all of college basketball next season – this title sponsorship is truly a perfect performance match, so we are excited to welcome Continental Tire to the very best of college basketball,” said Brooks Downing, President of bdG Sports. “Given the lofty expectations of both teams, the destination location of Las Vegas and the recently announced pending retirement of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, it’s no surprise that we have a sellout this early in the cycle.”

Gonzaga will enter next season as the top-ranked team in the country led by Drew Timme, a second-team All-American and the Karl Malone Award recipient as the nation’s top power forward last season. The Bulldogs will reload with the program’s best-ever recruiting class highlighted by the nation’s top-ranked recruit in the 2021 class, Chet Holmgren, a 7-footer from Minneapolis,  and fellow McDonald’s All-American Hunter Sallis. In addition to playing in this past season’s national championship game, Gonzaga became the first team in NCAA Division I history to win 30+ games in five straight seasons, a feat made even more impressive given the shortened seasons the past two years due to COVID-19.

For Duke, every game next season now takes on greater importance after Coach Krzyzewski announced that 2021-22 will be his final season on the bench. The Hall of Fame coach enters the season looking to add a sixth national championship to his resume with a team that will include three five-star freshmen in Paolo Banchero (ranked No. 3 by ESPN), Trevor Keels (No. 21) and AJ Griffin (No. 27).

Peter Uihlein wins MGM Resorts Championship at Paiute

LAS VEGAS – Peter Uihlein ran away with his second career Korn Ferry Tour victory on Sunday with a final-round 3-under 69 to win the MGM Resorts Championship at Paiute. Uihlein outpaced David Lipsky and Jamie Lovemark by four strokes at Paiute Golf Resort’s Sun Mountain course.

“Very difficult, the wind was relentless,” said Uihlein. “But I got off to a dream start…To get off to that good of a start on the front nine, and I would say the first six are probably the more challenging holes out here, so getting off to a good start was big for me.
