The Army Black Knights finished the 2018-19 season with an 13-20-7 overall record and return four of their top-five leading scorers heading into this season, including senior Dominic Franco who finished with a team-high 14 goals with nine coming on the power play. The Cadets also return a pair of veteran goaltenders in Trevin Kozlowski and Matt Penta. Kozlowski finished last year with a 5-6-2 overall record to go with a 2.70 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage, while Penta finished with a 4-4-3 record to go with a 2.61 GAA and a .892 save percentage. The Cadets’ power play was sixth nationally last season with a .244 efficiency. The team is led by coach Brian Riley, who is a three-time Atlantic Hockey Association Coach of the Year. Since 1950 a member of the Riley family has served as the bench boss for the Knights as Brian’s brother Rob coached the team from 1986-2004 and their father, Jack, recorded 542 victories in 36 years as Army’s coach from 1950-1986.

The Cornell Big Red cruised to a 21-11-4 record during the 2018-19 season and reached the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive year. Cornell ended the season ranked No. 8/10 in the nation. The Big Red finished second in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and reached the conference championship by way of a first-round triumph over Union College and a semifinal victory against Brown University. The Big Red were downed by the Clarkson Golden Knights in the ECAC championship game, 3-2, in overtime. After receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, Cornell earned a No. 3 seed in the East Regional and the No. 2 Northeastern, 5-1, in the first round. The team’s season came to an end in the second round as the Big Red fell to No. 4 Providence College, 4-0. Forward Morgan Barron returns for his junior year after leading Cornell in scoring during the 2018-19 campaign with 34 points (15 G, 19 A) in 36 games. Barron finished third in the nation in shots on goal (152). Defenseman Yanni Kaldis paced all Big Red blueliners with 28 points (4 G, 24 A) last season and will man Cornell’s defensive zone as a senior in 2019-20. Goaltender Matthew Galajda posted a 16-8-3 record between the pipes in 2018-19 with a 1.85 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage. Cornell is led by The Jay R. Bloom ’77 Head Coach of Men’s Hockey Mike Schafer. Schafer, class of 1986, is the winningest coach in Cornell’s history with an overall record of 458-259-95 and is the two-time defending Ivy League Coach of the Year.

The Ohio State Buckeyes concluded the 2018-19 season with a 21-11-4 overall record and were ranked No. 12/11 overall by the season’s end. Throughout the season, they held a spot in the top 15 for 27 weeks. OSU captured the Big Ten regular season crown and earned the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament but were eliminated in the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament by Penn State. The Buckeyes reached the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive season but had their hopes of returning to the Frozen Four ended at the hands of the Denver Pioneers in the first round. Forward Tanner Laczynski is Ohio State’s highest-returning scorer as he posted 30 points (10 G, 20 A) during the 2018-19 season. Forward Gustaf Westlund, a 2019 VGK Development Camp invitee, was eighth on the team in scoring with 19 points (5 G, 14 A) in 25 games and was voted the team’s 2019 Freshman of the Year. The Buckeyes’ 2019-20 roster will include freshman Layton Ahac, who was drafted in the third round (86th overall) by the Golden Knights during the 2019 NHL Draft. Ohio State is led by Head Coach Steve Rohlik, the 2018 and 2019 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Rohlik has been at the helm since 2013-14 season and has an all-time record of 113-84-28 as OSU’s bench boss.

The Providence Friars completed the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 24-12-6, finishing with the No. 4/4 ranking in the nation. The Friars tied for second in Hockey East and were awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where they earned the No. 4 seed in the East Regional. Their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance began with a 6-3 win against No. 3 overall seed Minnesota State followed by a shutout victory against No. 2 Cornell. Providence punched its ticket to its fifth Frozen Four in program history, but the Friars fell, 4-1, to eventual champion Minnesota-Duluth. The Frozen Four appearance was Providence’s first since 2015 when the team captured its first national championship. The Friars return forward and Vegas Golden Knights 2017 NHL draft pick Jack Dugan (5th round, 142nd overall) who finished second in scoring among freshmen in the country with 39 points (10 G, 29 A). Dugan was named to the Hockey East Conference All-Rookie Team and was a finalist for the league’s Rookie of the Year Award. Providence will go through a changing of the guard in net during the 2019-20 season as four-year standout Hayden Hawkey departed after last season. The Friars are led by head coach Nate Leaman who enters his ninth season in 2019-20 with an overall record of 176-100-38 since taking over in 2011. During the 2017-18 season he became the fastest head coach to reach 100 wins in school history. He led Providence to its first title during his fourth season at the helm in 2015.

Gulf Coast Showcase to feature five defending conference champions and five NCAA Tournament teams

ESTERO, Fla. – At least five teams that won a share of a conference title last season will be part of the Gulf Coast Showcase this Thanksgiving at Hertz Arena while the inaugural winner of the women’s event, Middle Tennessee, returns to defend its 2013 crown, organizers announced Tuesday. The regular-season champions from the Missouri Valley Conference and Horizon League, Drake and Wright State respectively, headline the men’s field. The women’s field also will feature a Drake squad that won the Missouri Valley Conference as well as Gonzaga (West Coast Conference champs) and Maine (America East champs).

“Since we launched this event in 2013, we have attracted quality programs on the men’s side that can compete with anybody in the country,” said Brooks Downing, whose company bdG Sports manages the annual event. “Three years ago, Houston won the men’s tournament and it really kickstarted the run to being a Top-25 program. Last season, UC Irvine played in our championship game and ended up winning 31 games after beating Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament.”

The men’s tournament will be played on Nov. 25-27 with four games each day. The announced teams include (2019 results and conference finish):

  • Drake – 24-10 overall, 12-6 conference (T-1st in Missouri Valley Conference)
  • Wright State – 21-14, 13-5 (T-1st in Horizon League)
  • Northeastern – 23-11, 14-4 (2nd in Colonial Athletic Association)
  • Weber State – 18-15, 11-9 (T-4th in Big Sky Conference)
  • Miami (OH) – 15-17 overall
  • South Alabama – 17-17 overall
  • Two teams to be announced

The women’s tournament, played on Nov. 29-Dec. 1 with four games each day as well, features six teams that won 20+ games and five teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament. Arizona State advanced to the Sweet 16 while Gonzaga narrowly fell to Oregon State in the Round of 32. ASU, Dayton, Maine, Middle Tennessee and Purdue have all played in the Gulf Coast Showcase since its inception in 2013. The full field of the women’s tournament features:

  • Arizona State – 22-11, 10-7 (5th in Pac-12 Conference) / NCAA Tournament
  • Auburn – 22-10, 9-7 (T-6th in Southeastern Conference) / NCAA Tournament
  • Drake – 27-7, 17-1 (1st in Missouri Valley Conference) / NCAA Tournament
  • Gonzaga – 29-5, 16-2 (1st in West Coast Conference) / NCAA Tournament
  • Maine – 25-8, 15-1 (1st in America East Conference) / NCAA Tournament
  • Middle Tennessee – 23-11, 11-5 (T-3rd in Conference USA)
  • Dayton – 17-14, 10-6 (T-4th in Atlantic 10 Conference)
  • Purdue – 19-15 overall

“The fact that five teams in the women’s field has played here before tells you what college basketball thinks of the Gulf Coast Showcase,” said Women’s Tournament Director and ESPN analyst Debbie Antonelli. “We set out to create the best women’s tournament in the country, and once again, this eight-team field highlights the best the sport has to offer. And, this year’s field is as wide-open as any since the tournament’s inception.”

For the fifth consecutive year, the tournament will support the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The hospital is the only children’s hospital between Tampa and Miami and provides vital health care for the region’s sick and injured children and their families. The hospital’s  new $242 million facility provides 300,000 square feet of space, 128 pediatric and NICU beds with space to expand to 160 beds, a 17-bay emergency department, a freestanding pediatric pharmacy and in-hospital school classroom.

Ticket and Fan Travel Information

Tickets for the 2019 Gulf Coast Showcase will go on-sale this summer. Fan travel information, including preferred hotel rates at the official tournament resort hotel – the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point – is available on www.GulfCoastShowcase.com.

bdG Sports announced as streaming partner for The Las Vegas Big Time Tournament

HENDERSON, Nev. – The Las Vegas Big Time Tournament (www.bigtimelasvegas.com) has partnered with bdG Sports (www.bdglobalsports.com) to create an online streaming platform for the summer tournament formerly known as the Fab 48. The platform will stream nearly 1,000 games of the boys 15U-17U divisions with websites for both general fans and college coaches.

“We are excited to forge this partnership with bdG Sports to showcase the thousands of kids in the Big Time Tournament,” said Gary Charles, the founder of Tip of the Hat Hoops (www.tipofthehathoops.com) and Co-Director of the Big Time Tournament. “We will create a premium platform for college coaches throughout the country to continue to scout and recruit players at the nation’s top summer tournaments. This will truly be “BIG TIME” for all involved.”

The new summer recruiting calendar will no longer permit thousands of college coaches to flock to Las Vegas as in years past. The platform of live and on-demand games for college coaches will allow access by men’s programs across the country to watch thousands of kids competing on July 24-28 in Las Vegas through a trusted provider, bdG Sports, with deeps roots in the college basketball space.

bdG Sports launched its own streaming network last fall and produced more than 50 men’s and women’s college basketball games from its own NCAA Division I men’s tournaments in the Bahamas, Southwest Florida, Las Vegas and Vancouver. During the 2018-19 season, bdG oversaw 14 college basketball events with 24 of its participating teams competing in the 2019 NCAA Tournaments (men’s and women’s) including Kentucky, LSU, Notre Dame (women) and Oregon State (women).

“Our team has been producing college basketball events at MGM Resorts properties in Las Vegas since 2013 and we are excited to take this next step in partnership with Gary Charles and Grant Rice,” said Brooks Downing, President of bdG Sports. “We launched the bdG Sports Network in the fall producing and broadcasting games in four different cities and three different countries over Thanksgiving week. Through this partnership with the Big Time Tournament, we will create a premium package for college coaches that will bring thousands of recruits right into their offices as part of the network.”

Pricing for game broadcasts and the college coaches package will be announced at a later date. Those interested in more information can email [email protected] to receive the latest updates.

Rafael Campos earns first career win at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic

GREAT ABACO, Bahamas — In his 63rd career start on the Web.com Tour, Rafael Campos broke through with his first victory on Wednesday at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at The Abaco Club. Campos posted a final-round 2-under 70 to finish at 7-under 281, becoming the first Puerto Rican to win on the Web.com Tour in the process.

“I got really emotional coming off the green,” Campos said. “My caddy told me to take my time on that eight-inch putt at the end and I didn’t know why. And then when I made it I thought to myself, ‘Okay, had a good week,’ but the cheer from the crowd was so loud and I looked over at the leaderboard and saw that I was on top … it’s just really emotional.”

Marty Dou wins The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic

GREAT EXUMA, Bahamas – Almost a year-and-a-half after his first Web.com Tour win, Zecheng “Marty” Dou took home another title in style by draining a 55-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to erase any doubt. The putt gave Dou a two-stroke win in the first event of the year at 18-under at The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay.

“It feels great to win the first event,” said Dou. “I’ve won before at the end of the season, which feels similar, but being out here and winning in a different way … In that one (at the KC Golf Classic), I was leading the whole time. In this one, I was leading and then struggled a bit and had to come back from behind at the end.”

Western Michigan beats Air Force for Ice Vegas Invitational championship

LAS VEGAS – The 17th-ranked Western Michigan hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games after defeating Air Force, 4-1, to win the 2019 Ice Vegas Invitational at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night.

Ethen Frank scored twice and the Broncos (11-6-1) also picked up goals from Luke Bafia and Lawton Courtnall on the night. Bafia and Frank were both named to the All-Tournament team while Trevor Gorsuch was named the Ice Vegas Invitational Most Valuable Player after making 24 saves on the night and allowing just two goals on the weekend.

Air Force, Saint Lawrence excited to come to Vegas for the second-annual Ice Vegas Invitational

BY MIKE FIELDS

When promoters of the Ice Vegas Invitational sent out word that they were looking for teams to take part in their second annual college hockey tournament, Air Force Coach Frank Serratore responded faster than a slap shot.

“Going to Las Vegas for a tournament is a unique, exciting experience. And you’re playing in an NHL arena,” he said. “So as soon as I heard about it, I contacted them and we were able to secure a spot.”

Air Force will be joined by Connecticut, Saint Lawrence and Western Michigan in the Jan. 4-5 event that is being promoted by bd Global in partnership with T-Mobile Arena, home of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.

Air Force senior forward Kyle Haak won’t mind getting out of Colorado Springs and spending a few days in Las Vegas. “A little warm weather in January never hurt anybody,” he said with a laugh.

Serratore is always looking for travel opportunities for his Falcons.

“We like to fly the flag,” he said. “We’re America’s team, so we like to get out and around. The Dallas Cowboys aren’t America’s team. We are.”

Haak used to think it was a stretch for his coach to say they were America’s team.

“But I think it gets more and more true,” he said. “We’ve gotten some standing ovations in arenas that are typically hostile environments for opposing teams. So that’s interesting.

“At the end of the day, though, we’re here trying to get an education, play some great hockey, and serve our country, especially once we graduate. We’ll definitely be fighting for America in a couple years.”

The Falcons figure to draw their share of fans to T-Mobile Arena, considering Nellis Air Force Base is only few miles outside Las Vegas. About 9,700 military personnel and 3,500 civilians work at Nellis.

“It’d be great if they’ll be able to come out and support us,” Haak said.

Air Force came close to making the NCAA Frozen Four the last two years. It lost to eventual national champion Minnesota Duluth 2-1 in the West Regional finals in 2018, and fell to Harvard 3-2 in the East Regional finals in 2017.

The Falcons have been slowed by a rash of injuries this season, but Serratore hopes the Christmas break will allow their roster to get healthy. “Meanwhile,” he said, “we’ve been plunking away and finding a way to get some wins.”

Haak, who is the Air Force Cadet of the Year and ranks No. 1 in his class academically, thinks Ice Vegas will be a perfect way for the Falcons to prep for the post-season.

“We’re playing two different teams Friday and Saturday in an NHL arena, kind of a neutral site just like the playoffs, so it’ll be a great opportunity to forecast the environment that we’ll hopefully be in at the end of the season,” he said.

Saint Lawrence Coach Mark Morris said the Saints’ interest in Ice Vegas was piqued by a couple of family ties.

Joe Sullivan, who was their team captain last year and is now playing professionally for the ECHL Manchester (NH) Monarchs, is from Las Vegas.

“When we heard (Ice Vegas) was a possibility, Joe’s parents and some other parents got to talking about it,” Morris said.

Also, Saint Lawrence sophomore Jake Stevens’ sister is a dancer in a Las Vegas show.

“With those connections, the idea of going gathered momentum in a hurry,” Morris said. “There’s lots of excitement. It will be a new experience for a lot of our fans, and give our alums out west a chance to see our team play.”

Saint Lawrence has a roster stacked with young players.

“We’re in the midst of transition,” Morris said. “We’re primarily a freshman and sophomore team. Unfortunately, we’ve had a rash of injuries to overcome. We had a similar situation last year, but right after Christmas we went into a Vermont showcase tournament and wound up winning it. Hopefully we can do that again.”

Saint Lawrence will face Air Force in the first round of Ice Vegas, and UConn will take on Western Michigan. This season, Western Michigan has beaten and tied No. 3 Minnesota Duluth, and swept No. 11 North Dakota.
